Specifications and Types of polycarboxylate Superplasticizer

There is no unified national or industry standard naming rule for the specifications and types of polycarboxylate high performace water reducing agents. They can be named based on their own product characteristics, target performance and application scenarios. The model usually contains the following information:

1

Water reduction rate/Performance grade:

  • Standard type/common type: The water reducing rate is usually around 20% to 25%.
  • High performance type/high water reduction type: The water reduction rate is usually 25%-30% or higher.
  • Ultra-high water reduction type: The water reduction rate can reach over 30%, and it is used in the preparation of ultra-high strength concrete or in situations where an extremely low water-binder ratio is required.
  • Slow-release type/slump retention type: It particularly emphasizes the ability to maintain slump (such as small loss within 1 hour /2 hours), and is suitable for long-distance transportation or high-temperature construction.
  • Early strength type: While ensuring the water reduction rate, it can significantly enhance the early strength of concrete.
  • Anti-mud type/anti-clay type: It has good tolerance to sensitive substances such as clay and mud powder in the aggregate.

2

Form:

  • Liquid: The most common form, with a concentration (solid content) typically ranging from 20% to 50%. Concentration is a key parameter.
  • Powder: Mainly used in special occasions (such as dry-mixed mortar, export transportation, etc.).

3

Focus on main functions:

Some types will directly highlight their most prominent features, such as "slow-release PC", "Early strength PC", "anti-mud PC", "viscosity reduction PC", etc.

It may contain information related to the structure of the mother liquor (such as HPEG, TPEG, APEG, IPEG, etc., but this is usually described in the technical data and may not be reflected in the model).

4

Viscosity/Fluidity:

For self-compacting concrete or high-fluidity concrete, there are types that focus on reducing viscosity and improving fluidity.

5

Environmental protection features:

Environmentally friendly products such as formaldehyde-free and low-alkali may have specific labels.

Important Note:

  • Please look directly at the technical parameter table! When choosing a water reducing agent, the most important thing is not the type name, but the technical parameter table provided by the manufacturer, which will clearly indicate: Recommended dosage range, water reduction rate, solid content/concentration, density, pH value, chloride ion content, alkali content, slump increase value, slump retention value (such as loss in 1 hour and 2 hours), compressive strength ratio (such as 3 days, 7 days, 28 days), setting time difference, shrinkage rate ratio, compatibility description with cement, etc.

  • Consult the technical department of the manufacturer: Based on the specific engineering requirements (such as cement type, aggregate conditions, construction conditions, strength grade, durability requirements, etc.), the technical department of the manufacturer will recommend the most suitable type and dosage.

Water Reduction Mechanism of Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer

The water reduction mechanism of polycarboxylate superplasticizer is determined by its molecular structure. The core lies in the steric hindrance effect, supplemented by electrostatic repulsion. This is significantly different from traditional naphthalene-based water reducers (mainly relying on electrostatic repulsion).

1

Water Reduction Mechanism of Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer

  • Main chain: It is usually polymerized from monomers of acrylic acid or maleic anhydride containing anionic groups such as carboxyl groups (-COOH) or sulfonic acid groups (-SO₃H), providing adsorption groups and partial electrostatic repulsion.
  • Side chain: Composed of long polyoxyethylene ether (PEO) chains (such as HPEG, TPEG, MPEG and other polyether macromonomers). This is the core feature of polycarboxylate superplasticizer. The length of side chains (molecular weight) and density (grafting rate) are of vital importance.

Mechanism of Action

  1. Adsorption: The anionic groups (carboxyl groups, sulfonic acid groups) in the water-reducing agent molecules are anchored and adsorbed on the surface of hydrated cement particles through electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonds or ionic bonds.
  2. Electrostatic repulsion: The anionic groups adsorbed on the main chain endow the surface of cement particles with the same negative charge, generating electrostatic repulsion between the particles and preventing them from approaching each other for flocculation. This is the main mechanism of traditional water reducers.
  3. Spatial steric hindrance effect: This is the most core and effective water-reducing mechanism of polycarboxylate superplasticizer.
  4. The polycarboxylic acid molecules adsorbed on the surface of cement particles will have their hydrophilic polyether long side chains extending towards the aqueous solution.
  5. When two cement particles adsorbed with water-reducing agent molecules approach each other, their extended long side chains will physically overlap in the space between the particles.
  6. This overlap compresses the conformational space of the side chains, reduces the entropy of the system, and generates a thermodynamic repulsive force (entropy repulsive force).
  7. Meanwhile, the long side chains themselves also form a physical barrier, hindering the direct collision and contact of the particles.
  8. This repulsive force generated by the spatial occupation of polymer molecular chains is called the steric hindrance effect. It is more durable and stable than electrostatic repulsion (less affected by the ionic strength in the solution), and can more effectively disperse cement particles and maintain dispersion stability (i.e., good slump retention).
  9. Release of free water: Through electrostatic repulsion and a strong steric hindrance effect, polycarboxylate superplasticizer effectively destroys the flocculation structure between cement particles, releasing the free water wrapped inside the flocs, thereby significantly improving the fluidity of the cement slurry (i.e., significantly reducing the water consumption required to achieve the same fluidity).

Summarize the advantageous mechanism of polycarboxylate superplasticizer

  • High water reduction rate: The steric hindrance effect has an extremely high dispersion efficiency.
  • Excellent slump retention: The steric hindrance effect is less affected by ion concentration, is not easily shielded, and has a more lasting dispersion effect.
  • Low dosage: Its high molecular weight and comb-like structure enable it to achieve excellent dispersion effects at extremely low dosages.
  • Strong designability of molecular structure: By adjusting the main chain functional groups, side chain length (PEO molecular weight), side chain density (grafting rate), molecular weight size and distribution, etc., the performance of water reduction, retarding, slump retention, early strength, and mud resistance can be precisely controlled to meet different engineering requirements.

Understanding its water reduction mechanism is conducive to better selecting and using different types of polycarboxylate superplasticizers and solving the workability problems of concrete in practical engineering.
